Some additional reflection on my previous Supplemental Wisdom post: “You don’t attract badasses with bullshit.”
In 1914, Ernest Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men left for Antarctica. Despite all odds, every one of them returned home after 497 days of grueling tragedy.
I’m convinced the only reason the men on the Endurance survived is because of the recruiting.
You don’t attract badasses with bullshit.
You don’t attract winners when everyone gets a trophy.
You attract people you’re proud to work side-by-side with by being upfront with the suck, and guaranteeing recognition ONLY upon a job well done.
They knew the risks; they knew the rewards.
They knew their leader was along for the ride, no matter the outcome.
They knew what they were signing up for.
Many returned from certain death to volunteer for war; many did great things AFTER accomplishing the impossible.
The lessons learned from the Endurance are transferrable to life itself.
To endure, you must first believe that you can.
Never give up on yourself; you can accomplish more than you think.
